Nobodaddy, Protect Us, Shelter Us
It is traditional to invoke a god, chant a few syllables, or sing a praise song at the beginning of a project. I have chosen Mahakala, one of the Buddha dharma's fierce protector deities, to do this honor:
When I am stuck,
my heart in my throat,
nowhere to turn,
I name you, Mahakala,
Protector of the Imagination .
Is it such an infantile gesture
to mumble
some variation of your mantra
when looking for a little help?
If I have any courage left and
can look you in the eye,
I see that we are not so different.
My own song transforms
you and me.
