| PZI has been my spiritual home since 1993 when I began working with the koans under the guidance of John Tarrant, a marvelous teacher. He is the author of Bring Me the Rhinoceros. Read it. David Weinstein, who teaches with John, runs the Oakland Zendo. He was a long tome student of Yamada Koun Roshi in Kamakura and is my spiritual link to several Jesuits in Japan who worked with Yamada.
I also appreciate very much my work with John's latest addition, Rachael Howlett. PZI is one of the most innovative zen communities in the US, if not the English speaking world. |

| Maitri AIDS Hospice is one of the many gifts that Issan left during his life. I think it appropriate to say that Maitri is the gift that he gave with his life. I was honored and privileged to work with him and many others while the Hospice took shape, creating a life of its own as a way for westerners to practice compassion and meditate on impermanence.
